More from the ‘Spotlight’ Conference

Last week’s e-Bulletin gave news of the presentations given in the first session of the recent ADF ‘Spotlight’ Conference, here we have the second session’s speakers contributions.

SPEAKER REVIEW – The 2nd Morning Session – Customer needs analysis

Jerry Bart of Ecocall

Kicking off the afternoon session was Jerry Bart.  Well-known from his days at Saxon Automotive, Jerry is now at Ecocall, the telecoms provider who, through their contracts with automotive companies, support our trade charity, BEN.  Claiming to be totally ‘untechie’ as far as telephone systems were concerned, Jerry nevertheless managed to provide some useful rules for the assessment of charges and providers’ contracts.  His golden rule was; if you’re with BT, then change, everyone is cheaper than BT!

Michael Gillespie of Cobbetts

Michael Gillespie, of law firm Cobbetts, is well-known in West Midlands legal and business circles and, as can be seen from his photograph, displays a remarkable resemblance to a certain historical figure.  As he said on opening his speech, “Please be warned, I can lip-read anyone saying ‘looks like Abe Lincoln’ at a hundred metres!”

However, in a entertaining and amusing presentation, Michael also managed to put across the key points of managing employment law in his talk entitled, ‘To sack or not to sack, that is the question’.  He reminded delegates of a sign often seen by railway lines, ‘Stop, Look, and Listen’, and he advised his audience to use that as a useful guide to handling disciplinary and dismissal matters.
